Australian workplace payouts are generally guided by Fair Work National Employment Standards, awards, and enterprise agreements. When you leave a job, several different payments can come together in your final pay. Knowing how each one works makes it easier to check your payslip and ask the right questions.
Permanent employees accrue paid annual leave as they work. If you finish up with unused leave hours, those hours are usually paid out at your ordinary rate, and often with a 17.5% leave loading depending on your award or agreement.
Redundancy pay applies when a role is no longer needed and the employer cannot offer comparable work. The National Employment Standards set a sliding scale based on years of continuous service, with separate rules for small businesses and certain industries.
Most employees are entitled to a minimum notice period when their employment ends. If the employer chooses not to have you work that notice, they generally pay you in lieu for the same number of weeks.
Your full entitlements depend on your employment type, the relevant award or enterprise agreement, and your length of service. The Fair Work Ombudsman is a good starting point if you want to dig deeper into the rules that apply to you.
